This was a model for The Rough Rider, a monumental sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt on horseback, now at the front entrance to the Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon. Another monumental size is in Minot, North Dakota. Two other sizes were also cast—one at Mandan, North Dakota and the other at the Roosevelt House in New York. Roosevelt was a friend of Proctor’s. He invited Proctor to join the Boone and Crockett Club in 1892 while Proctor was working at the World’s Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. Later on, Roosevelt commissioned Proctor to create buffalo heads for the State Dining Room in the White House. President Truman remodeled the dining room and these buffalo heads are now in the Truman Museum. Identifying marks: trademark coin (underside). Copyright Phimister Proctor Church, 1996.
