The plaster used for the mold was a study for the monumental Pioneer Mother in Kansas City, Missouri, which was cast in Rome, Italy, in 1926. A complete bronze statue of this size with the group (Mountain Man, Mother with Baby, Frontiersman and two horses) is at the Santa Barbara Museum in California. Proctor created this plaster in his studio at the American Academy of Rome were he was a Resident Sculptor. After Proctor moved to Los Angeles he used Hollywood actors as the models for this statue.
