PIONEER MOTHER circa 1924 30"h x 18"w x 24"d edition of 18 $8,900
The plaster used for the mold of this bronze was a study for the monumental statue Pioneer Mother in Kansas City, Missouri which was cast in Rome, Italy, in 1926. It was also part of a life-size grouping that featured the Mountain Man, Mother with Baby, Husband and two horses which is at the Santa Barbara Museum in California. Proctor created these plasters in his studio at the American Academy of Rome where he was a Resident Sculptor.
The model for this statue was a family friend who posed for Proctor in his studio in Los Angeles, California. As was the case with all of Proctor's models, she posed nude and after completing the clay model nude, he added the clothing to it. Identifying marks: trademark coin.
