Originally, the Indian was to have two wild dogs on a leash with a bow & arrows and a bear skin over his arm. Big Beaver drove 1,500 miles with Proctor from the Blackfoot reservation in Browning, Montana to Los Altos, California to model for this sculpture, as well as On The War Trail (Denver, Colorado) and The Mohawk Indian (Lake George, New York). Big Beaver (The Bear Hunter) was a study Proctor pursued with the hope of getting a commission for a monumental statue. The anatomy of this sculpture has been reported to be among the finest ever created in America. A bas-relief created by Proctor shows his idea for the complete statue and will be included with the purchase of this statue. Identifying marks: signed A. Phimister Proctor, 1920, trademark coin.
